What is an 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch?

I'm looking to connect about 7 computers that are at my house, to the internet. I don't know if I should buy an 8 port router, or an 8 port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch. I'm not that tech-savy so I'm looking for plug-n-play - no messing with software unless I have to. Thanks

Go with the router - you need something to take care of DHCP addressing, and share one public IP address with all the computers in your house.
If you use a switch then you have to rely on the ISP router, which may or may not be able to do that.
