Buffalo’s AirStation Nfiniti High Power Giga Wireless-N Router & Access Point (WZR-HP-G450H) ($85 street) is the most feature-rich consumer router on the market. In fact, the latest Buffalo AirStation Nfiniti routers all have features you won’t find in most consumer-class routers, because Buffalo uses customized DD-WRT firmware for managing the router. It’s also a speedy router, particularly for a single-band unit. The problem is, most consumers who would want all these features would probably want a dual-band router. With a dual-band, users can regulate throughput-heavy tasks like streaming HD voice and VoIP to the 5 GHz for greater speeds.
Hardware
The AirStation’s speedy throughput is due to its 3x3 antenna configuration which can transmit up to 450 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band in optimal conditions. For extra signal boost, the router comes with three external antennas that attach to the top. With the antennas attached, the router is ungainly and quite top-heavy. It can be wall-mounted, however, or you can attach the base that ships with the router to steady it.
The rear panel features a USB port as well as a button for safely removing USB devices.
On the back panel are four Gigabit LAN ports and a WAN port. The front includes an AOSS (AirStation One-Touch Secure System) button. AOSS is Buffalo’s proprietary WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). The router’s chassis also has a “Movie Engine” button which is designed to boost video performance when enabled.
Five LEDs are also on the front indicating Power, Security, Wireless status, Router/WAN activity, and Diagnostics mode for troubleshooting.
The Setup
A CD ships with the device which includes firmware, user manual and a setup wizard. The setup wizard walks you through connecting the router and then checks for WAN connectivity.
I encountered one issue during setup; setting the router up with the laptop I use for testing while both were connected to a 5-port switch caused setup to fail. It wasn’t until I connected the laptop to one of the LAN ports on the router I could finish setup.
Buffalo’s setup wizard does instruct you to connect your laptop or desktop to one of the LAN ports on the router. However, I have not had any problems with the many routers I test using the switch. Home networks have become larger and a home network that uses a small switch to expand connectivity is hardly such an exotic configuration as it may have once been considered. I should have had no communication problem connecting the router and the laptop via a switch.
